Candlelight

From "Join a February Conversation with Murray"

Go to the project

After the twinkle of Christmas has been packed away for another season, I like to leave a few candles out and about. Knowing that the coming months will bring a few dark and dreary days, turning on my plethora of candles each night fills me with peace, calm and reflection. (Yes, they are remote controlled! Thank you Amazon for bringing these delightful wonders into my life!)

The front entrance to my home is still decorated for Christmas! It makes me happy so why should I take it down :) I'll trade in my evergreen garland for pancakes on Shrove Tuesday though!

@Patricia Oliveira But is it REALLY just "decorated for Christmas" ... or is it just "decorated"? ;-) I like to think that greenery and lights don't JUST have to be for Christmas ... and if it makes you happy (especially in these chilly days with less daylight), then I say: "We need MORE stuff that makes us happy!" Good for you!

Donna: I totally agree! My friends and family know how much I love candles, and they were probably half of my Christmas gifts this year! On a snowy afternoon or evening, I love nothing more than lighting a nice candle, putting on some quiet jazz, and savouring a cup of hot chocolate, coffee or tea. Simple pleasures, but they bring a lot of joy and peace---and in some ways, they seem to "extend" some of the good feelings of the Christmas season long after the decorations are put away!

That is really beautiful! The change in "mood" after Christmas is one of the reasons I leave my Christmas tree up longer (it is still up). The lights give me those feelings of calm, peace and reflection. Isn't it amazing how something as simple as lights can have such a powerful impact? I will now consider getting some remote controlled candles! Great idea!

@Tanya Bedard : My family and friends chuckle, but I leave a string of coloured lights up in my living room year-round ... I simply refer to them as "festive lights" :-) They do wonders for my mood when I'm working around the house in the evening!

@Tanya Bedard To me, mid-January is always one of the toughest parts of the year ... Many people have taken down their Christmas lights (or aren't turning them on), and the streets feel so much darker and less "festive" than before. I always appreciate households that continue to keep their outdoor lights shining, even weeks after Christmas is officially behind us.
