Happy Little Things

From "Faith and Fresh Perspectives: Reflecting on where we started and where we’re headed"

Go to the project

Being so busy, I try my best to focus on the little things in life. Indeed I have a document on my phone called "Happy Little Things". Throughout the year, when I am present or when I reflect on things that make me feel calm, happy, joyous or other positive states, I write them down. For example, my list has things such as "enjoying a cup of coffee in the still and quiet of the morning", "hugging my daughter", "listening to my cat purr", "the dancing flames of a campfire", "chatting with my sister over the phone", "the feel of sunshine on my face", "the smell of fresh cut grass" and so on. Later on, when I am not having a good day, I can pull this list out and not only read the list, or parts of the list (it is a big one now), but go to those moments and feel all of those warm fuzzies and I feel better. This general focus on the little things in life truly adds up to something quite large over time. Therefore, this summer, that will be my focus and what I look forward to...little things.

I agree with @Patricia Oliveira and @Murray Watson , what a great idea to write them all down! Something to look at, remember and strive for! And then once achieved, another thing to add to the list! This is definitely something I will take forward, and share with my kids, because sometimes I think they are not cognizant of the little things in life that make it so much more worthwhile! Thanks for sharing this @Tanya Bedard !

@Yvonne Stahlmann My pleasure! This is a great space for sharing and gaining inspiration from others.
What a wonderful idea! I've always wanted to keep a gratitude journal but I keep putting it off because it ends up feeling like another "thing" to do! Having a doc on a smart phone, which is always within reach, to jot quick notes feels less daunting than sitting with a pen and notebook! I'm going to try this out!

@Patricia Oliveira I have tried the gratitude journal but it feel too much like an "extra". I have a tendency to start journals and then go months without touching them. The list on my phone is beyond easy for me and because they are little things, they are super short to record and then go back to later on. Even if I don't record anything for awhile, I can still hop on it at any time because it is with me all the time. It is a list that looks so beautiful as it grows. Give it a go and see if it works for you.

I LOVE that idea, Tanya! Taking the time to actually WRITE down the "little things" that make us happy is a powerful reminder that, sometimes, they are actually the BIG things ... the things that nurture our hearts and souls, give meaning to our lives on a day-by-day basis, that enrich us and restore us to face the inevitable challenges of life. Thank you for sharing such a great idea!
